Me
I have always been a person of order. I was the child who was late to preschool because I was making my bed and never had to be told to clean my room. I strived for good grades and other outwardly achievements. Over the years, aging has forced me to face the chaos that is being human. I spent most of young adulthood fighting back with order and control. My journey with fertility, loss and motherhood brought this battle with chaos to a head. I slowly learned the practice of accepting and allowing as my world and identity shifted. It’s a practice that has become a core value to my life.
This in a nutshell is my work with clients. The blend of order and chaos. The use of theory and systems to understand behavior and organize our emotional experience. The use of evidence-based treatments to support clients with change. And the art of acceptance and flexibility. Mindful awareness of what is beyond control, and the freedom that comes with this acceptance.
I received my Master’s in Marriage and Family Therapy in 2010 and have been working in the field for 15 years. I have worked in a variety of settings, including community mental health, adoptions and private practice.
A word on Marriage and Family Therapists: Marriage and Family Therapist can be a confusing title as many think it means I treat couples and families. Marriage and Family Therapy refers to the modalities of treatment I was trained in during graduate school. I was trained to conceptualize people, problems and symptoms within the context of their family systems and environment. People do not exist in isolation and in order to provide effective treatment, it is important to consider context. Marriage and Family Therapists can treat the same symptoms and diagnoses as social workers and professional counselors.
